An illustration done for a dutch game developer magazine.
The magazine had an article about the Game Developer conference in San Francisco. I was asked to do an illustration for the cover refering to the GDC or San Fran and dutch game developers, so I went for this crazy theme featuring a typical 17th century dutch ship entering the San Francisco bay.
The ship is based on an actual Dutch East India Company ship called the Batavia, one of the most famous ships in the dutch fleet.
I had a blast working on this project.

The Batavia was shipwrecked off the coast of Western Australia. A huge chunk of the bow is on display at The Shipwreck Gallery in Fremantle. It is really awesome.

Sorry for the history lesson. The picture is awesome by the way.

You're right! It was actually shipwrecked on it's maiden voyage and is so famous because of the mutiny and masacre that followed among it's passengers. There's a 1:1 replica of the ship in the Bataviawerf in Holland. I used a photo of that replica as reference.
Thanks for the history lesson, but I was familiar with the story. Being dutch, I learned about it in school ;)
I didn't know about the bow on display in Fremantle though. If I'm ever in the neighbourhood I'll make sure to check it out! :)

There's a replica in some harbor in the Netherlands. The original shipwrecked on it's maiden voyage. It's famous because of the mutiny and masacre that took place among the survivors.

I love the detail in this illustration. The small little shells (cant remember what you call em) on the bottom fo the ship, the wood grain look at the back and side of the ship. Even the detail of the city in the far distance! I lov the detail you put into something like this. Its what makes this illustration amazing. Love the colors as well! :D
